(S1E)
S1E is a partnership between
Christine McLean & Jean Nicolas Dupere, the company was incorporated in the
province of Quebec in March 2000.
S1E’s goal is to develop
international business opportunities for Canadian companies and artist in the
electronic music sector. S1E has organized projects in Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Australia, China, with support from the public and
private sector.
S1E conceived and
implemented a national electronic music entrepreneur program between 2000 &
2004. This program received over $1 million in public funds and placed 70 young
Canadian’s all over the world, to gain a practical career experience, and further
develop Canada’s place as a cultural hotbed for electronic music talent and
product.
By attending trade
events, branding the sector and supporting its participants needs at the
international level S1E, was able to develop an expanded network and create the
following projects:
S1E’s National Music
Entrepreneur Program
Funding for this project
was gained at the national level, and received from the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.
- S1E designed, and
implemented a National Electronic Music Entrepreneur Program. This project
had the objective of offering an international work experience for
Canadian youth and emerging SME’s in the music industry.
- S1E organized work
placements and career mentors in Canada, and the USA, South America, Japan, Australia, and all regions of Europe.
- S1E managed the
budget and made biweekly payments to the participants of this program.
- S1E was responsible
for submitting to the Department of Human Resources and Development Canada
(HRDC) interim progress reports.
- S1E was responsible
for the project evaluation and conducting feedback reports with the
funding partner, host companies and project participants.
- S1E managed the
travel and accommodation budgets for the participants.
- S1E, was responsible
for an 80% success rate based on following up with the participant’s
status three months after the project goals were to have the participants
employed, returned to school, or starting their own businesses. S1E
maintained this success rate by coaching and mentoring the participants
during and after the project.
S1E’s Canadian Youth Commonwealth Music Program

- Partnered with the
Commonwealth Cultural Program committee in Manchester, England during the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and organized a Canadian electronic music showcase.
- Canadian
participants spent four weeks in the UK, in conjunction with the artistic
showcase at the Commonwealth Games; we also organized a training program
in collaboration with the Manchester Midi School.
- Christine McLean was a panellist at
the Commonwealth Games Cultural Industries business panel, alongside
Government cultural trade representatives from Quebec and Canada.
Montreal DJ’s & Producers
Business Training Program

- Organized this
international training program for ten aspiring DJ’s / Producers in the Montreal region.
- Solicited SME’s in Montreal and at the international level to offer youth working internships in their working
environment.
- After completing
their regional internship S1E organized a serious of workshops and panels
for the participants to help them to prepare for their international work
experience.
- S1E organized a
collective attendance at In the City in Manchester, England and offered the participants business networking events, and access to local industry
representatives in Manchester as they hosted one on one mentor sessions,
and group presentations.
MUTEK – Montreal

From 2002 – 2005
Manager’s of the team
that worked on the development, promotion, and implementation of the
professional series at MUTEK (included panels, workshops, and industry
networking events), this included engaging funding partners, and industry
professionals from all over the world.
- Wrote the funding proposal
and acted as representatives of MUTEK to government funding department. Received
funding to add an international business platform to the MUTEK festival,
for Canadian SME’s in attendance.
- Designed and
implemented the performance measurements and evaluations tools, used to
measure the success of this project for funding partners.
- Creative team that
conceived the MUTEK_INTERSECTION creative content, addressing both the
artistic and economic needs of MUTEK’s core audience.
- Formally invited the
panelist (from all regions of Canada, Japan, China, USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany) to Montreal to participate in the MUTEK conferences.
- Worked with the
festivals logistical crew on setting up travel arrangements for over 35
delegates (national and international) including organization of
accommodations, per diems, and meals.
- Acted as MUTEK’s
host to all of the delegates while in Montreal.
- MUTEK has been
presented in Canada, China, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Columbia and is part of a global network of forward thinking music industry people.
Trade & Performance Missions
S1E organized trade
missions for SME’s in Canada’s electronic music sector to the following
international events:
World Expo 2005, Aichi, Japan
- Designed and
implemented a trade mission and showcase for Canadian SME’s (small medium
enterprises) in music sector held at the World Expo, in Aichi, Japan.
- The mission included
SME’s from across Canada, S1E researched and invited local Japanese
partners with the goal of creating business and cultural ties for the
participants of the event
- Wrote the funding
proposal and managed the funds from the Department of International Trade
Canada, and the Trade Routes program at Canadian Heritage
- Event held at the Canadian
Pavilion at the World Expo, worked with government representatives from
the International Exhibition Branch at the Department of Canadian Heritage
- Designed the
performance measurement tools (survey, questionnaire) and wrote the final
report for government funding agencies and evaluated the results both
short and long term for participants.
- Organized hotel,
flights and fees for the participants.
Sydney, Australia & Tokyo, Japan – 2003
Designed and organized a
Trade Mission for SME’s in the music sector to Tokyo, Japan & Sydney, Australia.
- Worked with Canadian
trade commissioners in these areas to implement a business to business
networking event. Event held at the Canadian Embassy in Japan and the Canadian Consulate in Australia.
- Engaged, and managed
funding partners from Canadian Heritage & The Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade Canada.
- Made the selection
of participating companies by implementing a national call for
applicants. Applicants were asked to apply to participate by a set
deadline, sent out information on the mission to the media and through
emailing list to reach potential participants in all regions of Canada.
- Analyzed and
reviewed all applicants and selected the applicants that offered the most
potential to promote the Canadian music industry as a whole.
- Organized travel
(ground, air) for all participants to Japan and Australia.
Canada – UK Cultural Business Ties
Promotion of the
Commonwealth Games 2002
Manchester, England
- In 2000, S1E worked
on promoting Manchester as the host city of the Commonwealth Games 2002,
in Canada, this included promotion of Manchester as a cultural and
business partner in Canada.
- Montreal CINARS –
S1E organized the space, visuals, and promotional material on behalf of
the City of Manchester’s Cultural Industries Services, MIDAS and the
Commonwealth Games Committee, at a booth at cultural trade event in
Montreal.
Sonar - Barcelona, Spain

- Organized a trade
mission to SONAR in Barcelona, Spain for over 20 Canadian SME’s in the electronic
music sector.
- Rented the booth
space, designed the image and branding for promotional material.
- Solicited companies
from across Canada to be involved in the mission.
Popkomm - Cologne, Germany

- Organized a trade
booth at Popkomm in Cologne, Germany for over 20 Canadian SME’s in the
music sector
- The objective of the
mission was to market, and position Canadian music in the international
marketplace.
- Responsible for
hiring and manage freelance staff (writer, graphic designer publicist, and
translator). Responsible for the design of the trade booth and promotional
material
- Managed the budget,
organized travel, and accommodations, developed the projects evaluation
tools, and conducted the final project and financial reports required by
Canadian Heritage.
MIDEM - Cannes, France

organized a trade booth at MIDEM’s electronic village for Canadian SME’s.
- The objective was to
brand, market, and position Canadian electronic music in the international

- S1E oversaw the

- The directory is

- S1E has disseminated
this directory around the world at trade events in France, Germany, UK, USA, Japan and Australia.
Key Characteristics of

- S1E was hired to
conduct a study on the Canadian music sector for the Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trades, the study was aimed at Canadian cultural
trade commissioners, who are posted all over the world.
- This report was
developed by soliciting questionnaire responses from 25 Canadian electronic
music labels.
- S1E created the
results in a final report (French & English) that is available online
and password protected, so we can create a database of visitors and give
the contact details to DFAIT.
- This report includes
industry statistics, music samples, and conclusions and recommendations.
- S1E compiled the
national information and wrote the contents designed the website.
